Putting Your Child’s Well-Being First

When parents separate or divorce, decisions about custody and parenting time often feel like the most challenging part. You want what’s best for your children—safety, stability, and love—but you also want to protect your relationship with them.

At Rainwater Family Law Solutions, APC, I help parents reach custody arrangements that serve their children’s best interests while keeping conflict as low as possible. Whether through cooperative discussions or formal court proceedings, my focus is always on helping families move forward with respect and clarity.

Understanding Child Custody in California

California law recognizes two main types of custody:

  • Legal custody, which covers decision-making authority on major issues like education, healthcare, and religion.
  • Physical custody, which determines where the child lives and how time is shared between parents.

Parents may share custody (joint custody) or one parent may have primary custody (sole custody), depending on what’s appropriate for the child’s needs and each parent’s situation. Courts consider several factors, including the child’s age, health, emotional bonds, and stability, to decide what arrangement best supports the child’s well-being.

Creating Parenting Plans That Work

A parenting plan sets out the schedule and structure for how parents will share time and responsibilities. The best plans are practical, detailed, and built around the child’s everyday life, not rigid templates.

I work with parents to create plans that account for school schedules, holidays, extracurriculars, and transportation. When parents can cooperate, mediation can be an excellent way to design these arrangements privately and respectfully. If court involvement becomes necessary, I’ll ensure your voice and your child’s needs are clearly represented.

Modifying Custody Orders

Life changes, and sometimes your existing custody plan needs to change with it. If you or your co-parent have experienced a significant shift, such as relocation, a new job schedule, or concerns about safety, you may request a modification. I help clients present clear, well-supported requests to the court to ensure that any changes truly serve the child’s best interests.

A Balanced Approach to Co-Parenting

The goal of any custody case isn’t to “win,” it’s to create a stable environment where your child can thrive. I believe that when possible, preserving healthy co-parenting relationships benefits everyone. My role is to help you find that balance: firm when necessary, flexible when possible, and always focused on what’s best for your child.
